About Our Products
We developed StethoBarrier in response to a growing body of research that rigorously demonstrates the potential for stethoscopes to serve as vehicles of pathogen transmission. Research and our personal experiences emphasize why we neglect to clean our stethoscopes - concern about stethoscope wear and tear, lack of access to disinfection materials, lack of visual reminders and lack of time.
StethoBarrier products are made of polypropylene non-woven fabric. This fabric serves as a barrier to pathogens but is still flexible enough to allow the provider to maneuver the stethoscope. Unlike stickers, hard plastic covers or silicone diaphragm covers, StethoBarrier does not alter the functionality of the stethoscope diaphragm membrane. Our fabric is engineered to be thin enough to not interfere with sound transmission while preventing transmission of infectious organisms.
During our sound tests we found no significant difference in sound volume with and without StethoBarrier across biologically relevant frequencies. In pathogen transmission tests we applied a high concentration of Staphylococcus aureus to a test subjects’ skin and then auscultated with and without StethoBarrier before pressing the stethoscope into culture medium. Unlike the uncovered stethoscopes, the StethoBarrier-covered stethoscopes grew no colony forming units.
Unlike other disposable covers, our diaphragm cover and full-length stethoscope cover are one-size-fits-all. There is no need to buy multiple sizes of each product and manage additional inventory. The cover easily slips on in less than 5 seconds and has a non-tensioned fit on even large stethoscopes so it does not impede functionality of the diaphragm membrane.
Our goal is to improve public health and safety through social entrepreneurship that creates a positive return to society; as such StethoBarrier has the lowest cost per unit of any stethoscope cover on the market.
In addition to decreasing rates of healthcare acquired infections, StethoBarrier aims to increase patient safety and satisfaction. A case study recently found that the implementation of a hospital cleanliness package that included increased contact precautions; hand hygiene and communication lead to gains in Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) scores.
StethoBarrier is a cost-effective and practical solution to preventing cross-contamination facilitated by stethoscopes. StethoBarrier products address each of the perceived barriers to stethoscope sanitation and visually convey the prioritization of hygiene to patients.
